It was the third session of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) which had been held each year since the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change came into effect, and is also commonly referred to as the Kyoto Conference, the Kyoto Conference to stop global warming, and the COP3.

In the COP3, the Kyoto Protocol was adopted to impose regulations on the emission of greenhouse gases by industrialized countries.
